Iron IV therapy · Edmonton

Iron Infusion in Southwest Edmonton

When fatigue, brain fog or breathlessness keeps pulling you back, the answer isn’t another guess. SMRT Health uses your symptoms, health history and bloodwork to determine whether IV iron is right for you.

IV iron is offered only after clinical assessment confirms it is appropriate. Symptoms alone cannot diagnose iron deficiency.

Your body may be signalling

Could low iron be part of what’s holding you back?

Iron helps your body move oxygen and supports normal energy metabolism. When iron stores are low, the impact can show up in ways that are easy to dismiss as stress, poor sleep or “just being busy.”

01 · ENERGY

Exhaustion that rest doesn’t fix

You wake up tired, fade through the workday or need more recovery than you used to.

02 · FOCUS

Brain fog and poor concentration

It feels harder to think clearly, remember details or stay mentally present.

03 · BREATH

Breathlessness or reduced stamina

Stairs, workouts or ordinary activity may feel more demanding than expected.

04 · BALANCE

Lightheadedness or headaches

You may notice dizziness, headaches or a racing heartbeat, especially with exertion.

05 · REST

Restless legs or disrupted sleep

An uncomfortable urge to move your legs may make it difficult to settle at night.

06 · VISIBLE SIGNS

Hair, nail or skin changes

Hair shedding, brittle nails, paler skin, feeling cold or craving ice can occur with low iron.

Important: these symptoms can have many causes. A proper assessment and lab testing are essential before deciding whether iron treatment—and especially IV iron—is appropriate.
Choosing the right route

Oral iron is often first. IV iron has a specific role.

The best treatment is the one that safely corrects your deficiency and fits your clinical situation. We don’t assume an infusion is the answer.

Oral iron may be right when…

Deficiency can be corrected gradually, absorption is adequate and the treatment is well tolerated.

  • It is safe and appropriate for your situation
  • Your digestive system tolerates it
  • Your follow-up bloodwork shows a response
  • There is no urgent clinical need for faster repletion

IV iron may be considered when…

Iron needs to bypass the digestive system or oral treatment has not been a workable solution.

  • Oral iron causes side effects you cannot tolerate
  • Your levels do not improve after an appropriate trial
  • A condition limits absorption
  • Ongoing blood loss or clinical urgency changes the plan

The SMRT difference

Your ferritin result is part of the story—not the whole story.

Iron can fall for different reasons. Replacing it without considering the cause can leave the real issue unresolved. Your care plan may explore factors such as:

Heavy or prolonged periods
Pregnancy or postpartum needs
Digestive or absorption concerns
Dietary intake
Other sources of blood loss
Chronic health conditions

When symptoms or results require investigation beyond our scope, an appropriate referral may be part of your plan.

What to expect

From “I’m exhausted” to a clear next step.

Every person’s pathway is different, but your care follows the same four principles: assess, personalize, monitor and recheck.

01

Assess

Our Nurse Practitioner will review your symptoms, health history, medications and available lab results. Additional testing may be recommended.

02

Personalize

If IV iron is appropriate, the formulation, dose, preparation and timing are determined for your clinical needs.

03

Infuse & monitor

Your treatment is administered by our experienced IV infusion RNs, with monitoring and clear guidance about what to report during your visit.

04

Follow up

Repeat labs and a symptom review help assess your response and guide any further care or investigation.

Informed care is safer care

IV iron is effective for the right patient—and it is not risk-free.

Most people tolerate modern IV iron, but side effects and infusion reactions can occur. Your clinician reviews relevant allergies, medical history, current labs and contraindications before treatment.

During the infusion, tell the team immediately if you feel unwell or notice pain, burning, swelling or leaking near the IV site.

Your individual consent conversation is the place to discuss the exact product, expected benefits, alternatives, possible reactions and after-care instructions.

Straight answers

Iron IV questions, answered.

Do I need bloodwork before an iron infusion?

Yes. IV iron should be based on clinical assessment and current iron studies and blood counts. Bring any recent results you have; your clinician will tell you whether additional testing is needed.

Do I need a referral or prescription?

No. Start by booking an assessment. If you already have a prescription or recent lab results, bring them. The SMRT team will explain the clinical and prescribing steps required for your situation before an infusion is booked.

How long does an iron IV take?

Appointment length varies with the prescribed product, dose and monitoring requirements. We will give you a realistic time estimate when your plan is confirmed.

How quickly will I feel different?

Response varies. Some people notice symptom changes as iron levels recover; others need more time or have symptoms caused by something else. Follow-up bloodwork—not a promised timeline—shows how your body responded.

Is IV iron the same as a blood transfusion?

No. An iron infusion delivers an iron medication through a vein. It does not contain donated blood.

Can IV iron be used during pregnancy?

IV iron is used in some pregnancies, but timing, formulation and dosing require individual assessment. Book a consultation and include your prenatal care provider in treatment decisions.

What will it cost, and is it covered?

The infusion costs $265, plus the cost of the prescribed iron. The iron may be prescribed by our Nurse Practitioner or your healthcare provider. Your assessment with our Nurse Practitioner is complimentary.
